Reading a Map

School of Navigation

So What Do We Know About Navigation?

Apart from Ice Warrior's founder, Jim, who has been training people, successfully, in navigation for over 40 years, our staff are some of the best navigators around and have huge amounts of serious experience themselves, as well as the ability to teach others, thoroughly. All courses are directed and sometimes taken by Jim.

Tester Day - test your daytime Nav skills with our test and evaluation course 10:00 to 16:00

Tester Night - darkness and micro navigation brings a whole different perspective to finding your way around effectively - challenge yourself with this test and evaluation course 18:00 to 00:00

Beginner/Refresher - Day 1 and Day 2

Just what is a map, what does it show and how do you use it on the ground to find where you are and what is around you? After a quick session of planning and plotting we get you straight out there, practising.

Beginner/Refresher 1 - A one day course from 10:00 to 16:00

Beginner/Refresher 2 - A one day course to follow on from Day 1 - from 10:00 to 16:00

Foundation Course - This 2 day course is both of the above and more, together in a residential course and will leave you with the ability to go and practice map and compass work yourself, touching on the electronic device for aid. Perfect preparation for NNAS courses.

Intermediate

Here we will brush up on and enhance your pre-existing skills with map compass and electronic devices such as watches, gps receivers, mobile phones, etc. You will learn to navigate from bolder to cist, to crag, to cairn, to boundary stone and back in the worst of weathers; all of the time knowing exactly where you are. Perfect preparation for more advanced courses such as NNAS Gold, Instructor and Mountain Training Association courses.

Advanced

Competent already at navigation and micro navigation you will push your boundaries with differing map systems, projections, grids, datums, co-ordinates and global, remote navigational methods; even touching on celestial navigation. This is one for the truly ambitious adventurer or expedition leader or team member.
