We have a wide selection of waterproof trousers here in Ice Warrior Expedition Basecamp so I am going to focus on just three - the Odyssey pants from Mountain Equipment, the Foray pants from Outdoor Research and the Alpine Pro pants from Montane.
My memories of wearing waterproof trousers were of baggy, shapeless trousers with elasticated waistbands that you put on only when completedly necessary as they were about as cool as clown shoes. Fortunately, things have moved on considerably. I have had a pair of Odyssey pants for about a year and love them to bits.
Odyssey Pants - Mountain Equipment
This is our top selling pair of waterproof trousers by some way. We have had them in the shop from the very beginning and they have always been popular. They have a trim fit and a simple elasticated drawcord. You will hardly notice that your wearing them. The 3-layer DRILITE® 40D fabric keeps you perfectly dry and also does a good job in stopping the wind. The full length YKK® moulded Aquaguard® side zips up the outside of each leg makes them very easy to put on and take off, even when wearing walking boots. The zips can also be used for venting. All of the waterproof trousers that we stock only come in black. In terms of size, Mountain Equipment offer these in S - XXL for men and 8 - 16 for women. Additionally, you can opt for Short, Regular and Long for men and Short or Long for women.
Foray Pants - Outdoor Research
The Foray Pants from Outdoor Research are £5 more than the Odyssey pants, but have a few simple features that may well stear you in their direction. OR only do the Foray pants for men, but I think you can safely consider them as unisex. They are made from Gore-Tex and have YKK® Aquaguard® zips up the sides. These do not come all the way up like on the Odyssey pants, but are again 2-way so can be opened at the top to improve airflow when it is warm. Where the Odyssey pants have velcro straps at the bottom, OR have opted for poppers.
There is a pocket on the rear which also doubles as a stuff sack. Loops at the waist can be used to attached braces which are available seperately. They can also be laced to your boots at the bottom for extra protection.
Sizes range from S - XXL.
Alpine Pro Pants - Montane
For those that are out in the elements for long periods of time, we have a range of trousers in Gore-Tex Pro. The Alpine Pro pants are GORE-TEX Pro 40 Denier mountain waterproof shell pants, with taped seams and tough GORE-TEX Pro 70 Denier panels in high wear areas. The insteps are reinforced with rip-stop nylon. Aswell as full length waterproof zips up the sides, the gusseted lower legs can be opened with a zip and adjusted with drawcords to accommodate boots. As you can see in the photograph, the trousers come with detachable braces.
Notably, these are the only trousers featured here that have a fly.
Size range from S - XXL
They may not be a most glamorous of products, but you will never regret investing in a pair of good quality waterproof trousers.
