Worthwhile Purposeful Expeditions

The last World first to be claimed in the Polar Regions, #LASTPOLE is an expedition to the Northern Pole of Inaccessibility - the furthest point from land in the Arctic.  Over 80 days, four teams will trek more than 800 miles across treacherous sea-ice in one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth.  Recruited from all walks of life, these citizen scientists will collect vital data about the state of the ice, weather conditions, levels of pollution and the distribution of Polar Bears - information that can only be obtained by ground-truthing on location.

The Scientific Rationale

Citizen Science - Ordinary people cutting through commercial, political and personal agendas, searching for and discovering change.

Ground-Truthing - Gathering vital, simple data over areas seldom if ever visited and for significant periods of time.

Scientific Innovation - Furthering the understanding of sea-ice geophysics in order to improve models and therefore create more accurate predictions.

The change in the Earth's total heat content is greatest in the oceans.  Sea-ice is critical to climate change.  The Arctic has been losing 10% of its permanent ice layer every ten years since 1980.  The Global Circulation Models currently available to scientists do not accurately replicate sea-ice interactions and conditions.  Ice Warrior's #LASTPOLE Expedition will collect regular sea-ice observations that will contribute significantly to the understanding of the region and greatly improve these models.

The team will also -

  • record weather and atmospheric information for The Met Office

  • monitor levels of pollution in the region

  • log sightings of Polar Bears
