One of the major aims of the Arctic Pole expedition is to gather crucial data relating to the state of the ice on the ocean. By doing this from land to the very centre the team will provide the NASA funded NSIDC scientists, led by Walt Meier, with a sound benchmark. This benchmark will be used to both calebrate the climate satellites and inform future climate change research.
Each day the team will make several stops to mark out and drill holes in the ice to enable depth and temperature readings to be taken. These readings will then be sent back to the NSIDC scientists for analysis and sharing with the wider climate change community.
