‘Dana and I were off to fulfil one of her dreams: tracking and photographing 3 month old polar bears as they and their mothers made the trek from the birthing dens in Wapusk National Park back to the shores of Hudson’s Bay. The problem was, we could expect temperatures of -500 C and we were going to be outside up to 8 or 9 hours a day. And I was determined to come back with all the bits I had when I arrived!
Google (what else!) led me to ice-warrior.com and a brief phone call with Jim had me feeling that I had found someone I could trust. He wasn’t just trying to sell me something, he’d been there, he knew what it felt like, he knew what was required.
We arranged to meet at Lori and Jim’s base. We looked at, tried on, discussed. My initial feeling that this was someone I could (would!) trust was more than borne out, and seconded by Dana, as the depth of Jim’s knowledge and responsibility became clear.
We bought everything we needed and Lori dropped us back to the station. Later that week Jim met Dana at Heathrow with everything neatly packed and ready to fly. We had a few sizing problems and we had bought some things we weren’t, after all, going to need (believe me, we weren’t going to get cold if I had anything to do with it!). Replacements and refunds were handled flawlessly, and with a smile.
Everything worked exactly the way Jim said it would. We WERE outside for 8 hours at a stretch in -500 C, and we didn’t get cold. Which, frankly, I would not have believed possible.
Dealing with Jim and Lori to get outfitted was the perfect decision. Ice-Warrior. Does EXACTLY what it says on the tin!’
